Accessing WCS

How to get GUI access to the Windows-Compute-Servers from Windows-, Mac- and Unix-Desktops

Accessing WindCompS-GUI

To access the GUI (graphical user interface) of WindCompS computers, please use RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) - the outdated option to use VNC is not supported any longer (and was never working fully in the past...)

How to establish a GUI-connection depends on the users operating system:

  • Windows-User have the RDP-Client "mstsc" built-in.
  • MacOS-Users need to install the RDP-Client from Microsoft.
  • Unix-Users usually have rdp-viewer tools available from their distributions repositories.

After initiating a Remote-Connection via RDP, the user has to login to the Windows-GUI with its MDC-Domain account.

Access Restrictions

GUI-Access to WindCompS is only permitted for members of the following MDC-Groups:

AG_Rajewsky, AG_Landthaler, CF_Dieterich, CF_Kempa, CF_90907_Chen

AG_Selbach (only WCS-04, -05, -07 and WS01)

GUI-Access is mutual exclusive for all WindCompS "Client"-OS computers (WCS-nn), while WS01 (which runs as a Windows-Terminal-Server and) accepts easily 20 parallel users (as long as not everyone performes CPU-intensive calculations ;-). If a WCS is locked, try to access another one or ask the current user (you get his name told, if you try to connect to a blocked WCS), whether he still needs GUI-Access.

Windows-Logon-Message:

HINT: First check the "CPU-report" on http://login2.mdc-berlin.net/ganglia to identify an unoccupied WindCompS computer.

Leaving WindCompS-GUI

Important: Please "Log Off" and not just "Disconnect" when you are done.

Windows-Start-Button,

Because in "Disconnected" State (or when you simply close the RDP-Window or restart your computer), you stay logged in to this machine and others can't use it. "Disconnect" is your choice, if a long-running application is busy on the WindCompS and you check the outcome some days later. (But please don't forget this, otherways the Administrator will log you out remotely and your data may be lost then...)

In brief...

Windows

The RDP-Client (mstsc) is already installed.

  • Launch the Remote-Desktop-Client: Click on "Start", "Run..." and type "mstsc"
  • Specify the WindCompS-machine to login:
    • Computer = "BIMSB-WS01" or "BIMSB-WCS-nn", with nn=[01, 02, 03, ..., 09]
Notice the [Options] button: there you can choose the target-screen-size (default is "full screen") and other settings. Also you can "Save" the detailed settings to a RDP file on your Desktop (or elsewhere) for One-Click access in the future.
  • Give your MDC-Account credentials [Username, Password, Log-on-to = "MDC-BERLIN.NET"]
  • Now you have interactive access to the selected WindCompS GUI.
Notice the bright bar on the top of the screen while working "Full Screen". In this bar there is also the "minimize" button to get your local desktop back to front; alternatively you also can "window-ify" the RDP-connection to have local and remote side-by-side. Set the case you have two displays attached to your computer, it's extra comfortable to have the RDP machine fullsize on one screen and the local machine on the other screen.
  • When you are finished, please "Log Off", and not only "Disconnect".

MacOS

Once: Download RDC201_ALL.dmg (or the latest version or App from Microsoft) to install the Microsoft Remote Desktop Client

  • Launch the "Remote-Desktop-Connection": from your Dock or Applications-Folder (in Finder: Shift-Cmd-A). If already running: Use "File" -> "New ..." (or Cmd-N) to open a new connection.
  • Specify the WindCompS-machine to login:
    • Computer = "BIMSB-WS01.MDC-BERLIN.NET" or "-WCS-nn.", with nn=[01, 02, 03, ..., 09]
In the "Settings" (Cmd-Comma), you can choose a different (larger) target-screen-size and modify other settings. Also you can "Save" (Cmd-S) the detailed settings to a RDP file on your Desktop (or elsewhere) for One-Click access in the future.
  • Give your MDC-Account credentials [Username, Password, Domain = "MDC-BERLIN.NET"]
  • Now you have interactive access to the selected WindCompS GUI.
  • When you are finished, please "Log Off", and not only "Disconnect" or close the RDP-Window.
